Before a property can be built, it is important that a preliminary Ecological Appraisal (previously known as an Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey) has been carried out to understanding the ecology on the site and assess the implications of the proposed development.

Starting a development without considering whether the building works could negatively influence potential protected species on site could lead to a delay in construction and exposure to financial penalties and other restrictions being imposed by the relevant authorities.

EMEC works closely with house builders to avoid these pitfalls and will help to educate construction workers to spot the signs that protective species are present on site prior to works and whilst they are in progress.
