Trapping and Translocation of Great Crested Newts and Reptiles
Using our ecology and land management expertise, EMEC works on great crested newt pitfall trapping and translocation projects. As well as providing the skilled staff to safely catch and handle protected species, EMEC can undertake habitat creation (pond construction and hibernacula construction), the team can also carry out the installation of temporary amphibian fencing and newt/reptile fencing.
The trapping of amphibian and reptile species is typically carried out through the use of artificial refuges and pitfall traps (for great crested newts and specially protected reptiles this can only take place under a licence from Natural England). Captured individuals will be moved to an agreed receptor area. Trapping typically takes between 30 and 90 days, and is a recognised mitigation technique to allow development to lawfully proceed in accordance with national and European wildlife legislation.
Our colleagues at EMEC Ecology are able to carry out great crested newt surveys and reptile surveys should these be required for a site you are working on.
