The Hook Local Nature Reserve, nestled between the River Trent and the Lady Bay residential area, is a cherished green space recognised for its ecological significance. Designated as a reserve in 2009, The Hook offers a diverse range of habitats, including riverbanks, open meadows, wildflower glades, woodlands, scrubland, and a drainage dyke. A wildlife pond and community orchard have also been introduced as part of the site’s ongoing development efforts.
Earlier in 2024, The Hook earned its first Green Flag Award, a prestigious recognition marking it as one of the UK’s best green spaces. This accolade reflects the high environmental standards, meticulous maintenance, and excellent visitor facilities the reserve offers.
To further boost biodiversity and enhance the visitor experience, a de-silting project was needed to improve the water flow of a dyke by clearing its bank. This project aimed to support the diverse wildlife and ecosystem at The Hook Nature Reserve.
Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) allocated funds from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) for this critical initiative. With this support, EMEC Ecology led the efforts to rejuvenate over 600 square meters of green space by removing vegetation and silt from the stream.
In addition to desilting, EMEC cleared brambles along the bank to create open water habitats and grassy areas for birds, insects, and water voles. The work, completed last month, involved improving a drainage ditch stretching from Holme Road through The Hook to the river. While some reed sections were preserved, other areas were excavated to form pools, providing suitable habitats for wading birds like snipe and water rail, which have already been spotted in the area.
The project aims to support the return of water voles to the reserve, which have faced habitat loss and predation in recent years. The de-silting effort will revitalise the reserve’s watercourse, creating a thriving environment for birds, insects, and water voles, with hopes for an increase in their populations. Additionally, clearing bramble patches will encourage other vegetation to flourish, benefiting insect life.
