fish pass

Fish passes help fish to navigate past natural obstructions, such as waterfalls, or man made structures, such as culverts, dams or weirs, allowing free upstream and downstream movement. EMEC can design and construct a fish pass to facilitate free movement past obstructions in a water course which might present an obstacle to migrating fish.

Examples

Fairham Brook Fishpass Project

Over the years Fairham Brook has been transformed into a straight ditch, draining agricultural land. At one section an old metal weir, built under a railway bridge, had become a barrier to breeding fish reaching the upper stretches of the Trent tributary. EMEC’s land management team brought in 17 tons of Yorkshire stone and usedd this to construct a fishpass under the bridge. Stones of various shapes and sizes were used to create pools slowing the fall of water and raising the level of the water enough for the old weir to no longer be an obstacle for fish.
